1. In What ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (Part one)

My groups media product (a horror movie trailer called Asylum)uses, develops and challenges the forms and conventions of real media products.
Below you can see a selection of 9 key frames taken from other horror movies.

1. This is a shot from the movie trailer Forget Me Not. It is some teenagers about to drink some shots of alcohol, we chose this shot because it shows teenagers messing around and doing what teens do and this is what we wanted to portray in our video too.

2. This shot was also taken from the movie trailer Forget Me Not, this shot appears to show a random girl by the side of the road as a car full of teens drive past, this is the first odd sign in the trailer and it works effectively as the audience try to recognize her by they cant.

3. Is a shot taken from The Grudge movie trailer. Its a door closing on it's own, this is something that is sure to frighten the audience as its something that could happen in your own home, it also suggests that something you cant see has closed the door meaning that there are other people in the place that you never knew about.

4. The fourth screen shot was taken from the trailer, The Woman In Black, and it shows someone behind the main character (where he cant see them) with their hand on the window of the door, and it again this would suggest that there is something within that the main character cant see or communicate with.

5. This shot show three Innocent looking girls standing, looking at something. This shot is clever as it appears to show three innocent, sweet, young girls but the audience can tell that something may have happened to them or perhaps they are the evil because they aren't smiling or playing as young girls should. Their white/pink clothes and pale faces are what makes the audience think of innocence as these are colours issued to characters such as angels and baby's; people who couldn't possibly do wrong.

6. This shot was used for our media project because for us a bath/ shower scene in horror movies always scares us and in this picture the monster in the movie has her hand in the victims hair which is very scary, the idea is clever as its not something obvious, or something that has been done before.

7. This shot shows the power that a simple 'over the shoulder' shot can have. The mise-on-sene in the scene is clear as the woman in the background is part of this, her old fashioned clothes and her age are show us that shes from the past and is back in the present. This makes the scene scary as again she is unseen by the main character so we already know whats going to happen where as the main character doesn't.

8. The use of a Title in a movie trailer is obviously important but the fonts etc make it even more interesting. In this title the use of bold simplicity is effective as the audience want to read the title, also the way it goes from a lighter shade to a darker would suggest that the audience are stepping into the dark, where the horror is.

9. This shot shows some text asking the audience a question and this is something that i initially wanted to put into the groups trailer but it wasn't agreed on so we agreed on informative text as we all agreed that it would work better with our trailer. Questions and set put the audience on the edge of their seat because they want to know more but they cant usually until they've watched the movie which draws the audience in.

Below you can see 9 key frames taken from my groups teaser trailer ASYLUM.

1.This picture taken from our media trailer shows a teen, irresponsibly drinking alcohol before hes about to go into an abandoned hospital. We wanted our character to drink because then the audience aren't sure if the horrors they see are because of the alcohol the teens have drunk or if its real making it even more scary as the audience are left to figure it out for themselves.

2. The second picture was used for the intention of making the audience confused, with the help of the sound track alongside this frame we hoped that it would also make the audience jump as the girl in the shot in flashed in and out of shots with the same background but in a different shape, to give the illusion of blinking.

3. This scene is a match on action of the girl in the shot watching TV then turning around when the door opens mysteriously, to her then turning around from another view point so we can see the scary girl in the scene. The use of technical code in this scene is for tension building so the audience are 'freaked out'.

4. This shot the group had all seen in many horror movies before and we all agreed that it is an effective way of scaring the audience. We used it as a quick flash in our trailer through out the montage of other scary shots. We found this to be effective because it only flashes up so the tensity of the trailer because bigger.

5. Shot five helps create a narrative for the audience (without giving too much away). It shows a young, innocent girl playing with a dolly. The mise-en-sene also shows us that shes in a mental hospital through the white walls and white dress which is stereotypical of a mental hospital.

6. This shot shows how we chose to use some gore in our trailer. We originally wanted a gore biased trailer meaning that there would be lots of blood and unattached limbs etc. In the end we chose not too as the audience research showed that the audience would rather see ghostly behaviours etc. This scene shows a boy with with a slit neck in the bath tub, to the audience this would make the scene seem like the victim wasn't expecting the death.

7. The seventh shot shows one of the teens in the trailer, who has taken drugs and consumed alcohol, and the camera person who may also have done so, which is why the ghostly girl in the back ground makes sense. The audience get confused though as they can't tell if the girl in the background is just a hallucination or if she is actually there. This creates confusion and fright.

8. The Title shot is to tell the audience what the movie is called. For our title shot the voice-over whispers "Asylum". This gives the effect of things from the past, coming back to the present or, an someone who has been killed in the present whispering a haunting word.

9. The text also helps create a narrative for the story, the text in our trailer gives information and hints as to what might happen next. This creates suspense and drama and helps the audience to comprehend whats going on if the footage in the trailer doesn't.

  1. This is OK Laura but you need the stills from your OWN trailer for comparison.
